The Crisis
The devastating floods that swept through Borno State in September 2024 left a trail of destruction in their wake, contaminating water sources and creating a breeding ground for waterborne diseases like cholera. This crisis has exacerbated an already fragile health system, leaving vulnerable communities at increased risk. A recent needs assessment conducted by CHAD International revealed alarming statistics: a concerning 33% of respondents lacked adequate handwashing knowledge, and a staggering 82% of households lacked access to soap. These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve hygiene practices and prevent the outbreak of deadly diseases.
Response
To address this critical challenge, CHAD International has launched a comprehensive hygiene education initiative aimed at empowering local communities to become the first line of defense against cholera. The program focuses on key pillars:
Training Local Champions:
Empowering Water Management Committees: CHAD International is training 65 members of local Water Management Committees and hygiene promoters to become champions of change within their communities.
Building Knowledge and Skills: These individuals receive in-depth training on cholera prevention, safe water practices, sanitation, and effective handwashing techniques.
Mass Awareness and Personalized Outreach:
Radio Broadcasts: Engaging radio jingles are are currently reaching an estimated 2 million people across Borno State, disseminating vital hygiene messages and raising awareness about cholera prevention.
Face-to-Face Interactions: CHAD International's team is conducting home visits and one-on-one counseling sessions, reaching over 2317 households with personalized hygiene education and support.
