by CHAD International
This Household needs assessment conducted by CHAD International in collaboration with PLAN International, provides a comprehensive overview of the urgent WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) needs in the flood-affected areas of Borno State, Nigeria. The assessment reveals a dire situation characterized by widespread water scarcity, damaged infrastructure, and significant challenges in accessing safe water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene products.
Key Findings:
Water Scarcity: 73.5% of households lack daily access to safe water, primarily due to flood-damaged infrastructure and limited access to functional water sources.
Unsafe Water Sources: 11% of the population relies on unsafe water sources, such as stagnant water bodies and untreated surface water, significantly increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
Water Affordability: 66% of households cannot afford to purchase water due to increased prices (80% higher after the floods) and limited income sources.
Safety Concerns: 24.5% of respondents feel unsafe at water points, particularly women and girls, due to security concerns and the lack of adequate lighting and protection.
Poor Sanitation: 85% of respondents lack access to safe and adequate sanitation facilities, leading to widespread open defecation and increased health risks.
Hygiene Challenges: 82% of households lack soap for handwashing, and 33% have inadequate knowledge of proper handwashing techniques, hindering efforts to prevent the spread of diseases.
Menstrual Hygiene Difficulties: 70% of women and girls face challenges accessing menstrual hygiene products, with 71% lacking soap and water for proper hygiene during menstruation, further compromising their health and dignity.
Vulnerable Groups: The assessment highlights the disproportionate impact of the floods on vulnerable groups, including women, girls, children, and people with disabilities. These groups face heightened risks due to limited mobility, social exclusion, and lack of access to information and resources.
Recommendations: The assessment underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and targeted interventions to address these critical WASH needs.
Key recommendations include:
Rehabilitation of water infrastructure: Repairing and upgrading damaged water points and pipelines to ensure access to safe and reliable water sources.
Emergency water trucking: Providing emergency water trucking services to areas with limited or no access to safe water sources.
Water affordability measures: Implementing strategies to reduce the cost of water for vulnerable households, such as subsidies and community-based water management systems.
Improved sanitation facilities: Constructing and maintaining latrines, public toilets, and handwashing stations in affected communities.
Hygiene promotion and education: Conducting awareness campaigns on proper handwashing techniques, menstrual hygiene management, and other key hygiene practices.
Addressing gender-specific needs: Implementing targeted interventions to address the specific WASH needs of women and girls, including providing them with access to menstrual hygiene products and safe spaces for sanitation.
Community engagement and participation: Involving affected communities in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of WASH interventions to ensure their sustainability and ownership.
The findings of this needs assessment provide crucial information for humanitarian actors and policymakers to develop effective and targeted responses to the WASH crisis in flood-affected Borno State. Addressing these critical needs is essential for preventing disease outbreaks, improving public health, and promoting the well-being of the affected population.
